Police charge man who allegedly stole donation jar for charity that supports troops

Southern Regional Police have charged a New Freedom man with stealing a charity jar from a Rutter's Farm Store, according to a news release.

Gary Lee Richmond, 47 of Independence Drive took the money jar that was to be given to Support Our American Recruits, police said.

SOAR sends charity packages and Valentine's Day care packages to troops stationed abroad.

Richmond was identified by a Southern Regional Police officer after he was caught on surveillance footage.

Police are looking for a man they say took a jar containing money for a charity that supports troops from a Rutter's Farm Store in New Freedom.

Around 9:45 p.m. Jan. 23, a man got out of a light-colored minivan and entered the Rutter's to return two packs of cigarettes, according to Southern York County Regional Police.

While the clerk was distracted, the man stole a donation jar containing money for Support Our American Troops (SOAR), a charity that sends Valentine's Day care packages to local troops stationed abroad, police said. He put the jar under his jacket and left.

Police ask anyone who recognizes the man to call 717-235-3944.
