Bake your way through some of that extra Halloween candy with this three-layer ooey-gooey brownie recipe.

By Carol Ramos,?The Pastry Chef's Baking / November 2, 2012

This brownie is built in three layers. The first is a fudgy brownie base, the second is a layer of candy and peanuts, and the third is a layer of peanut butter, Rice Krispies, butter, and chocolate melted together.

Besides the obvious of sneaking in a piece here and there until suddenly it's December (or earlier) and you've consumed them all without any conscious memory of tearing open those wrappers and having "just one small piece."

Don't do it. Instead, sift through those bags you optimistically bought but ended up with less trick or treaters this year than last year or else go through that hard-earned pile your kids gathered traipsing through the neighborhood. Pull out the Snickers and the Reese's peanut butter cups and use them for this recipe.

You make the brownie layer and right before it's done, you sprinkle it with chopped toasted peanuts and chopped peanut butter cups and Snickers, return it to the oven for a few minutes, just long enough for the candy to begin to melt, then you take it out and top it with a rice krispie peanut butter chocolate mixture that will make you salivate.?

It's similar in concept to my Nutella crunch topping but uses peanut butter instead of Nutella. You can't see the middle layer very well in the picture since it's smothered by the Rice Krispie peanut butter chocolate topping but rest assured, every bite of this brownie will give you the full impact of how much goodness you can turn that candy into.?

If you're a peanut butter and chocolate lover, this is a brownie must-make and have-to-consume. After it cools completely, it's easy to cut and share with others so not only are you not the only one eating all that leftover Halloween candy but you (and your friends and family) are also consuming it in a much loftier fashion. These also freeze well for future consumption.

Recipe adapted from?Sally's Baking Addiction.

Brownie layer
1/2 cup butter
8 ounces coarsely chopped bittersweet chocolate
1-1/4 cups sugar
3?large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Middle layer
1/2 cup peanuts, toasted
1/2 cup peanut butter cups, chopped
1/2 cup Snickers, chopped?

Top layer
1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1-1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1-1/2 cups Rice Krispies cereal

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9- x 9-inch baking pan with foil and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.?

2. Melt butter and chocolate in the top half of a double boiler set over hot water on medium heat, stirring constantly until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in sugar.?

3. Add in the eggs one at a time, whisking until smooth after each addition. Whisk in the vanilla. Gently fold in the flour and salt. By hand, stir enough to emulsify the batter and bring it together but do not overbeat or your brownies will be cakey rather than fudgy if too much air is whipped into them.

4. Pour batter into prepared pan, smoothing the top with a knife. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs.

5. Remove brownies from the oven and?sprinkle the top with the peanuts, chopped peanut butter cups and chopped Snickers. Return to the oven and bake for 3-5 additional minutes.

6. While the brownies?are finishing up in the oven,?melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir in the Rice Krispies until evenly coated. Remove the brownies from the oven and pour the chocolate and peanut butter mixture over top. Spread to cover evenly. Refrigerate for 2 hours before cutting into 24 squares. Share.

Regional elections foretell turmoil in Italy

ROME (AP) ? Italy risks heading into political turmoil after a regional election showed a huge level of voter distrust in mainstream political parties, a result that could also rattle financial markets that have no small role in deciding the fate of the economically troubled nation.

A protest party candidate from a movement launched by a TV comic made a strong showing in Sicilian elections Sunday, a vote seen as a test of popular sentiment before nationwide polls in the spring to replace the government of Premier Mario Monti. The Sicily vote also was marked by sharply lower turnout, down to 47 percent of eligible voters from 67 percent in the 2008 regional elections.

The populist Five Star Movement garnered 18 percent of the vote ? not enough to win the governorship because other parties ran in alliances, but still making it the top vote-getting party and a force to be reckoned with. Movement leader Beppe Grillo attracted large audiences with his attacks on Monti's austerity policies and the seemingly endemic corruption among Italy's major political parties.

"Without doubt this result is not positive for market confidence and increases uncertainty ahead of the general election next spring," said an analysis by economists Chiara Corsa and Loredana Federico for UniCredit, Italy's largest bank.

Monti's government of technocrats imposed a painful austerity program and has started in on reforms that together have succeeded in bringing down Italy's borrowing costs, which had skyrocketed when his predecessor, media magnate Silvio Berlusconi, lost the confidence of markets that he could bring Italy's finances under control and balance the budget.

Italy's benchmark 10-year bond yield rose Monday after the release of the Sicilian election results ? from 4.85 percent to 4.94 percent, a sign that investors have become somewhat more cautious about the country's financial future. The bond yield edged back only marginally to 4.92 percent on Tuesday.

But Monti's term ends in the spring and he has ruled out running for premier, although he has left the door open for a second term if no party wins a clear majority and he is tapped to head another government. There has also been talk of Monti serving as finance minister in a government next year, a move that would also please Italy's eurozone partners.

Monti, speaking at a conference of the World Economic Forum in Rome on Tuesday, directed himself to Italy's political class as he sketched a picture underlining the virtue of unpopular ? but necessary ? policy.

"The really important thing is, we have done very unpleasant things, unpleasant things for the receivers and even unpleasant for the doers. The perception of what this government is doing is not fully good. But it is higher than that of any of the parties," Monti said.

"This is an important message for future governments: Do not believe that you cannot do the right policies, otherwise you risk your position in the future," he said.

A further unknown is Berlusconi's intentions. He had been supporting Monti's government and recently suggested he planned to retire from politics.

But the 76-year media magnate may have changed his mind after a court in Milan convicted him Friday of tax fraud. He attacked Monti, complained that Germany had too much control over Italy's economic decisions, and said he would stay in politics to reform the justice system.

Political analyst Massimo Franco, writing in the leading Corriere della Sera, said Italy is paying the price for Berlusconi's "sad decadence and his system of power." He also wrote that the Sicilian election result is a warning that the country risks becoming ungovernable.

AP poll: Majority harbor prejudice against blacks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Racial attitudes have not improved in the four years since the United States elected its first black president, an Associated Press poll finds, as a slight majority of Americans now express prejudice toward blacks whether they recognize those feelings or not.

Those views could cost President Barack Obama votes as he tries for re-election, the survey found, though the effects are mitigated by some people's more favorable views of blacks.

Racial prejudice has increased slightly since 2008 whether those feelings were measured using questions that explicitly asked respondents about racist attitudes, or through an experimental test that measured implicit views toward race without asking questions about that topic directly.

In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.

"As much as we'd hope the impact of race would decline over time ... it appears the impact of anti-black sentiment on voting is about the same as it was four years ago," said Jon Krosnick, a Stanford University professor who worked with AP to develop the survey.

Most Americans expressed anti-Hispanic sentiments, too. In an AP survey done in 2011, 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. That figure rose to 57 percent in the implicit test. The survey on Hispanics had no past data for comparison.

The AP surveys were conducted with researchers from Stanford University, the University of Michigan and NORC at the University of Chicago.

Experts on race said they were not surprised by the findings.

"We have this false idea that there is uniformity in progress and that things change in one big step. That is not the way history has worked," said Jelani Cobb, professor of history and director of the Institute for African-American Studies at the University of Connecticut. "When we've seen progress, we've also seen backlash."

Obama has tread cautiously on the subject of race, but many African-Americans have talked openly about perceived antagonism toward them since Obama took office. As evidence, they point to events involving police brutality or cite bumper stickers, cartoons and protest posters that mock the president as a lion or a monkey, or lynch him in effigy.

"Part of it is growing polarization within American society," said Fredrick Harris, director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University. "The last Democrat in the White House said we had to have a national discussion about race. There's been total silence around issues of race with this president. But, as you see, whether there is silence, or an elevation of the discussion of race, you still have polarization. It will take more generations, I suspect, before we eliminate these deep feelings."

Overall, the survey found that by virtue of racial prejudice, Obama could lose 5 percentage points off his share of the popular vote in his Nov. 6 contest against Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But Obama also stands to benefit from a 3 percentage point gain due to pro-black sentiment, researchers said. Overall, that means an estimated net loss of 2 percentage points due to anti-black attitudes.

The poll finds that racial prejudice is not limited to one group of partisans. Although Republicans were more likely than Democrats to express racial prejudice in the questions measuring explicit racism (79 percent among Republicans compared with 32 percent among Democrats), the implicit test found little difference between the two parties. That test showed a majority of both Democrats and Republicans held anti-black feelings (55 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans), as did about half of political independents (49 percent).

Obama faced a similar situation in 2008, the survey then found.

The AP developed the surveys to measure sensitive racial views in several ways and repeated those studies several times between 2008 and 2012.

The explicit racism measures asked respondents whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements about black and Hispanic people. In addition, the surveys asked how well respondents thought certain words, such as "friendly," ''hardworking," ''violent" and "lazy," described blacks, whites and Hispanics.

The same respondents were also administered a survey designed to measure implicit racism, in which a photo of a black, Hispanic or white male flashed on the screen before a neutral image of a Chinese character. The respondents were then asked to rate their feelings toward the Chinese character. Previous research has shown that people transfer their feelings about the photo onto the character, allowing researchers to measure racist feelings even if a respondent does not acknowledge them.

Results from those questions were analyzed with poll takers' ages, partisan beliefs, views on Obama and Romney and other factors, which allowed researchers to predict the likelihood that people would vote for either Obama or Romney. Those models were then used to estimate the net impact of each factor on the candidates' support.

All the surveys were conducted online. Other research has shown that poll takers are more likely to share unpopular attitudes when they are filling out a survey using a computer rather than speaking with an interviewer. Respondents were randomly selected from a nationally representative panel maintained by GfK Custom Research.

Overall results from each survey have a margin of sampling error of approximately plus or minus 4 percentage points. The most recent poll, measuring anti-black views, was conducted Aug. 30 to Sept. 11.

Andra Gillespie, an Emory University political scientist who studies race-neutrality among black politicians, contrasted the situation to that faced by the first black mayors elected in major U.S. cities, the closest parallel to Obama's first-black situation. Those mayors, she said, typically won about 20 percent of the white vote in their first races, but when seeking reelection they enjoyed greater white support presumably because "the whites who stayed in the cities ... became more comfortable with a black executive."

"President Obama's election clearly didn't change those who appear to be sort of hard-wired folks with racial resentment," she said.

Negative racial attitudes can manifest in policy, noted Alan Jenkins, an assistant solicitor general during the Clinton administration and now executive director of the Opportunity Agenda think tank.

"That has very real circumstances in the way people are treated by police, the way kids are treated by teachers, the way home seekers are treated by landlords and real estate agents," Jenkins said.

Hakeem Jeffries, a New York state assemblyman and candidate for a congressional seat being vacated by a fellow black Democrat, called it troubling that more progress on racial attitudes had not been made. Jeffries has fought a New York City police program of "stop and frisk" that has affected mostly blacks and Latinos but which supporters contend is not racially focused.

"I do remain cautiously optimistic that the future of America bends toward the side of increased racial tolerance," Jeffries said. "We've come a long way, but clearly these results demonstrate there's a long way to go."

Plan Your Sales Call Strategy - Steve W. Martin - Harvard Business ...

It's the question that goes through the mind of a salesperson during every call: How is the target reacting to my pitch?

It's an apt question. In my win-loss analysis interviews with more than a thousand key decision makers about what determines success or failure in sales, I routinely ask at what point in the sales cycle the salesperson actually lost the deal. The most frequently mentioned response is during a sales call. With this important turning point in mind, let's examine how to develop a winning sales call strategy.

Customers will have one of five different reactions to everything you say during a sales call. They will either reject your statements and ideas outright, ignore what you say, acknowledge they've heard you, accept what you say but do nothing, or internalize your recommendations and take action. The reaction you receive is influenced by the level of rapport you have established with the prospective customer.

Similarly, sales calls can be classified by the level of rapport.

Combative sales calls are antagonistic interactions with nonexistent rapport. Most likely, this type of situation occurs because the customer has a preexisting bias against your solution or an incompatibility exists between you or your company and the customer.

Contentious sales calls may begin congenially but are characterized by controversy or topical disputes that lead to ill feelings by the end of the call.

Unemotional sales calls lack outward displays of affection, and even though the call may last an hour, the customer remains aloof and unsympathetically distant.

Friendly sales calls are situations where the customer is generally receptive, cooperative, and open to your ideas. However, this doesn't mean they will buy your solution.

In synergistic sales calls, the customer shows genuine excitement, is receptive to your advice and recommendations, and jointly plans the future steps of the sales process with you.

Customers can experience many different types of reactions to salespeople, ranging from fear and hate to love and trust. For example, combative and synergistic sales calls are at the extreme ends of the spectrum. The winning sales call strategy is based upon executing synergistic sales calls and this is dependent upon establishing four different receptive states with the prospective customer.

Personal receptive state. The first priority is to build a personal receptive state by finding intersecting activities and interests you have in common with the prospective customer. By doing so, you develop rapport with the entire person, not just the business person--building a personal friendship that sets you apart from the competition. Collect personal information about the evaluators through research, casual conversations, and quick examinations of the pictures, objects, and mementos in their offices. Always, preplan how you will create a personal receptive state at the beginning of the sales call.

In addition, speak in the customer's unique language. Match the tone, tempo, and speaking style of your customer to make him or her feel more comfortable. The most important difference between you and your competitors is not solely your products, your company, or the services and support you offer. It's you and your ability to build a deeper relationship with prospective customers.

Technical receptive state. Every industry has developed its own language to facilitate the mutual understanding of terminology and an exact meaning of the words. The "technical specification language" consists of these abbreviations, acronyms, and specialized terms. Whether you are selling airplanes, computer chips, or telephone equipment, you need to know the terms and nomenclature of your industry.

A critical aspect of the sales call is not necessarily what you have planned to say on your call or in your presentation. Rather, it is how you handle the tough questions the customer asks you. Your question-handling ability is what helps separate you from the pack and this requires you to speak fluently with the customer in the technical specification language.

Business receptive state. When you demonstrate that your primary interest is in the customer's success, you begin to build a business receptive state. At this point, the customer starts to consider you more than a vendor. You have proven your value as a business partner who has the expertise to solve the customer's problem.

One of the main traits of top salespeople is language specialization because a "specialist" beats a "generalist" every time. Instead of the recitation of standard "generic" product features and functions to the customer, the business receptive state is based upon a tailored discussion about business process improvement that is specifically applicable to the customer's environment.

Political receptive state. You enjoy a political advantage over the competition when the customer believes that only your solution will help him achieve his personal benefactions. The term "benefaction" refers to the psychological benefits that determine a person's actions. It literally means receiving a benefit from taking action. Four core psychological drives determine selection behavior. People buy products they believe will help them fulfill deep-seated psychological needs: satisfying the ego, being accepted as part of a group or becoming the leader of it, ensuring survival, and avoiding pain. Customers rationalize their political decisions with logic and facts from the technical and business receptive states.

As a sales call progresses, continuously ask yourself if you are establishing the personal, technical, business, and political receptive states. A synergistic sales call occurs when all four receptive states are achieved whereas friendly sales calls may only have personal and technical receptive states established.

Finally, be sure to prepare your colleagues who will join you on the sales call by helping them understand what type of sales call to expect (combative, contentious, unemotional, friendly, or synergistic) and their role in executing your call strategy. Never forget, one of a salesperson's deadliest sins is to chatter and talk incessantly on sales calls. You have conducted the perfect sales call when you have listened far more than you spoke.

Syria rebels report advances in Aleppo

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rebels seized two northern districts in Syria's largest city Aleppo on Thursday, activists said, on the eve of a proposed truce for a Muslim religious holiday.

"We have just liberated Ashrafiyeh and the Syriac quarter," a rebel fighter said, referring to areas which had been held by Kurdish militias and troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

Rebels were still fighting around the Rahman Mosque district and trying to besiege a security building, he added.

Activists said at least 14 people were killed. It was not clear if the dead were fighters or civilians.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group monitoring the Syrian conflict, said Kurdish units were still fighting to stop the rebels from entering Ashrafiyeh.

Battles have engulfed Aleppo since late July, but a stalemate had developed, with snipers restricting movement of fighters and the two sides largely entrenched on frontlines.

Assad's government was expected to make a statement later in the day on whether it accepts the temporary ceasefire advocated by U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.

Syrian authorities said on Wednesday they were still studying the plan, but Russia's envoy to the United Nations said Damascus had indicated to Moscow that it would agree to it.

White House told of Libyan attack claim Sept. 11

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two hours after the U.S. Consulate came under attack in Benghazi, Libya, the White House was told that a militant group was claiming responsibility for the violence that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

A State Department email sent to intelligence officials and the White House situation room said the Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia claimed responsibility on Facebook and Twitter, and also called for an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli.

The document may fuel Republican efforts to show that the White House knew it was a terrorist attack, even as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations was saying ? five days afterward ? that it appeared to be a protest gone awry.

The Obama administration's account of the Benghazi events has become a campaign issue, with Republican challenger Mitt Romney and GOP lawmakers accusing the White House of misleading Americans about the nature of the attack. But militant groups often surface after such attacks claiming responsibility and it's difficult to immediately verify such claims.

The Associated Press and other news organizations obtained the unclassified email and two related emails from government officials who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about them publicly.

The House and Senate committees that oversee intelligence received a raft of documents from the Office of Director of National Intelligence on Monday, two congressional aides said. Congressional staffers combing through the documents have found a kaleidoscope of sometimes conflicting intelligence, backing up much of what intelligence officials explained over the past several weeks.

But members of both committees are still complaining that the original briefing they were given just after the Tuesday, Sept. 11 attack, differed markedly from the explanation the CIA director David Petraeus gave them by the end of that week. In that first briefing, just 12 hours after consulate was burned down, the intelligence committees received a report that it was a military style assault, but just days later, Petraeus stressed that militants had infiltrated a mob, a U.S. official said.

U.S. intelligence officials have said Petraeus outlined that extremists were believed to be in the crowd, and carried out the attack, and also stressed the picture was still evolving.

A U.S. intelligence official said Wednesday that it was "clear from the outset that a group of people gathered that evening" but that it took until the week after the attack to determine "whether extremists took over a crowd or if the guys who showed up were all militants." The official said the briefing included the analysis that the "attacks that appeared spontaneous," but also mentioned possible links to regional al-Qaida groups.

Meanwhile, the Tunisian government said it has arrested a 28-year-old Tunisian linked to the U.S. Consulate attack. Interior Ministry spokesman Tarrouch Khaled said Wednesday that the suspect, Ali Harzi, was in custody in Tunis. Khaled told the AP "his case is in the hands of justice," but did not elaborate.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday that the review board she appointed to investigate the attack is "looking at everything," rather than "cherry picking one story here or one document there."

White House press secretary Jay Carney said the emails represented just one piece of information the administration was receiving at the time.

"There were emails about all sorts of information that was becoming available in the aftermath of the attack," Carney said. "The whole point of an intelligence community and what they do is to assess strands of information and make judgments about what happened and who is responsible."

Carney, traveling with President Barack Obama Wednesday on Air Force One, said the emails were unclassified and referred to assertions made on a social media site.

There were a series of three emails sent by State Department officials in Washington as events unfolded on Sept. 11. Among the recipients was the White House situation room.

The first email said that the State Department's regional security officer reported the mission in Benghazi was under attack, and that "20 armed people fired shots." It said that Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed in the attack, was in Benghazi, and that Stevens and four others were in the compound's safe haven.

Forty-nine minutes later, an email said that the firing at the consulate "has stopped and the compound has been cleared," while a response team was attempting to locate people.

The next message, one hour and 13 minutes after the second and some two hours after the attack began, a message reported that Ansar-al-Sharia claimed responsibility for the attack.

"Embassy Tripoli reports the group claimed responsibility on Faceboook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli," it said.

Nearly six hours after the initial attack, a State Department memo said the shelter location for the Americans was receiving mortar fire and "there are reports of injuries."

Ansar al-Sharia bragged to members of al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb that it was responsible for the attack, according to recordings of phone calls intercepted by U.S. intelligence. But the group has publicly denied having anything to do with the attack.

Clinton, speaking to reporters at the State Department, said, "You know, posting something on Facebook is not in and of itself evidence and I think it just underscores how fluid the reporting was at the time and continued some time to be."

She added, "What I keep in mind is that four brave Americans were killed and we will find out what happened, we will take whatever measures are necessary to fix anything that needs to be fixed and we will bring those to justice who committed these murders."

Hilary Wagner: What You Gain from Public Speaking

In October 2010, when my first book came out, I was painfully nervous talking in front of groups. It didn't matter if it were kids or adults, I'd have so much anxiety I'd come close to backing out, that's how bad it got! On one occasion, I was scheduled to speak in front of 450 kids and came close to cancelling with some lame excuse, because I wasn't about to tell them it was my horrible fear of utter failure! My husband told me I had to do it. He said, he knew I was scared, but it was more important to not let the kids down, and in turn, not let down myself. He was so right! It was a rewarding experience and as soon as I got going I was fine. I still fought the anxiety for a while, but now, two years later, talking in front of groups, big or small, is such a pleasure!

I literally get goose bumps when kids sit up in their chairs and I can see them listening and thinking. And after my presentations, when kids come up and tell me about their stories and what they're writing, I can feel their excitement about writing. They ask for advice and ask me what I think about their ideas, and trust me, some of these kids have amazing ideas! They inspire ME!

Long story short, never be scared to share your story or give your advice. Even if you fall on your face, if you've inspired one writer, young or old, or they've inspired you, something amazing just happened!?

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Product Review: FlashPoint Candle

BTHM WTFY 2012 button

Art for art sake,
or art that doubles as a decorative useful item?

Most of us prefer the second, as we are limited on wall, counter or bookshelf space!

So I was thrilled to find out about an American company whose products more than meet the artistic, useful need we all have!

??

FlashPoint Candle was founded on the idea that candles do more than just freshen the air in your home. Their container candle line is both interesting and beautiful, and always of the highest quality ingredients.?Each piece is one-of-a-kind, you will never find two exactly alike, and every one is a piece of art! The ceramic holders come in 4 sizes- 9", 12", 15" and 20", in assorted colors and finishes.(Flashpoint also has pillars and floating candles for sale).

They have even taken special care with the inner vessel glaze! They thoroughly experimented with every possible color until finally Sky Blue was chosen as the perfect color to reflect the orange flame from the wicks, creating a perfect golden candle glow, as you can see in the picture below!?

I was sent the Saxon 9" ceramic base in a beautiful Mission Blue color! It came wonderfully and protectively packaged. I loved that they had a tight plastic wrap across the top, to keep the wicks safe (as you can see in the picture in the previous paragraph. Kiddo claimed the ivory grossgrain ribbon, with it's bit of lace, for her hair! It was this attention to the detail of packaging, that I knew was an example of the company's commitment to quality! The candle is 3" tall and stout at 6 pounds! It has 6 wicks, so you get a wonderful array of dancing light when it is lit, and a wonderful aroma quickly fills your room!? FlashPoint Candle products are made with premium soy blend wax and each fragrance is a masterpiece of the finest ingredients hand-blended for a perfect balance. They have 5 scents to choose from: Citrus Blossom (a floral/citrus blend), Irish Linen (a clean cotton fragrance with hint of an ocean breeze), Citronella (perfect for the larger exterior candled), No Fragrance (bare wax with no fragrance, perfect for dining room tables, as there is no smell to irritate anyone's allergies!) and Champagne Pear - which I was sent- a clean scent with a hint of Bartlett pear mixed with festive bubbly.?

What I really like about the scent is that it is not overwhelming. It starts out very subtle and then gains, but never gets to be too much. Similar to an oil lamp, you know it's there, but its not enough to want to blow it out. I found that after a couple of hours the wax had barely gone down (as you can see below), and i could smell the scent into the next room!

I really love watching the changing hues on the outside of the container- they seem to dance when different shades of light hit it. I love the blue- it is the perfect compliment to shades in the room. The candle holders come in 3 finishes- High-Gloss Finish (which mine is, in 5 different colors), Semi-Gloss Finish (in gold and white only- perfect for dining tables) and Matte Finish (only in Gun Metal and Ox Blood). So you are sure to find one that will compliment your room/outside area! I really love the idea of using a larger one and placing it in your fireplace- what a great way to showcase the candle during a party!

Flashpoint has even come out with candle covers! Like ye old plasticware covers, they will keep your wax candles safe from debris while outside, and pesky kids and animals, when inside!

?

When your candle is done you can reuse the ceramic holder: to hold pillar candles, to add water and floating candles, to hold ice for a party, or even to hold special treats (like for Halloween, Christmas and Easter time!). In fact the Saxon models are perfect for giving as a hostess gift this holiday season as they are the gift that keeps on giving!

And speaking of giving- FlashPoint Candle is committed to supporting local, regional and national parks, as well as historic properties! That's right- they are AMERICAN made, and American proud! The preservation of historic homes and undeveloped land for wildlife, is an important part of their charitable efforts. They donate products, a portion of their sales and hard working volunteers, for service needs at many foundations and parks each year.? They even have special promotions/sales to raise money for their causes, and we hope that you will support them in preserving American history and American parks, by purchasing these wonderful works of art, that keep on giving their beauty to you!??

Thanks Drea for making a candle into an art piece that is gorgeous and functional!

It makes my room as special as you, and your wonderful company are!?

Disclosure / Disclaimer:? I received this product free of charge, from the Flashpoint, for review purposes.?No other compensation, monetary or in kind, has been received or implied for this post. Nor was I told how to post about it.

White House prepared to meet one-on-one with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to block that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor said in a statement. He noted that efforts to get Iran back to the table with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany ? the so-called "P5+1" ? continue.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election campaign and Vietor's statement was released shortly after The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Vietor, however, denied that any such agreement had been reached.

"It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," he said. "We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear ambitions will likely be a topic. Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy, which began during President George W. Bush's administration, hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort. Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran and says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing as it continues to defy international pressure, including four rounds of sanctions from the U.N. Security Council, to prove that its atomic intentions are peaceful.

Those sanctions, coupled with tough measures imposed by the United States and European nations are taking their toll, particularly on Iran's economy. Iranian authorities have in recent weeks been forced to quell protests over the plummeting value of the country's currency. The rial lost nearly 40 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar in a week in early October, but has since slightly rebounded.

U.S. officials say they are hopeful that pressure from the sanctions may be pushing Iran's leaders toward concessions, including direct talks with the United States. But several said on Saturday that they did not believe such discussions would happen any time soon.

If one-on-one talks are to occur, they would likely follow the model that the U.S. has used in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea, the officials said.

In those discussions, U.S. negotiators have met separately with their North Korean counterparts but only as part of the larger effort, which also involves China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. Direct U.S.-North Korean talks are preceded and followed by intense consultations with the other members of the group.

However, the direct talks with North Korea have yet to bear fruit and U.S. officials warned that talks with Iran may not yield anything either. If U.S.-Iran talks do occur, they would likely be part of the P5+1 process, which groups the Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States and is overseen by the European Union. The group has met numerous times with Iranian officials but has yet to achieve any significant progress.

In late September, the group instructed EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to reach out to Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, to organize another meeting. No date had been set for the possible resumption of talks.

Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes but Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel.

Israel has threatened to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't stop uranium enrichment a process that can be a pathway to nuclear arms. Israel could decide to strike Iran's nuclear sites on its own, and Israeli leaders say time to act is running out. They have also hinted they would like U.S. support for any such attack.

An Israeli strike on Iran with or without Washington's involvement would likely draw retribution from Tehran including possible attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests overseas or disruptions to the transit of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which could send oil prices skyrocketing.

Obama has counseled patience as public as American public support for another Mideast conflict is low with the Iraq war over and the conflict in Afghanistan winding down.

Ohio voter fraud billboards to come down

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - More than 140 billboards in Ohio and Wisconsin warning of the criminal consequences of voter fraud will be taken down starting on Monday after the sponsor chose to remove them rather than reveal its identity, the billboard owner said.

The billboards, which show a large judge's gavel and read "Voter Fraud is a felony - up to 3 ? years and a $10,000 fine," went up primarily in low-income minority neighborhoods in early October, just weeks before the November 6 elections, and were immediately criticized by voter rights groups as an attempt to intimidate minority voters.

The sponsor was not identified on the billboards owned by Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc. The company said this was a violation of its policy against anonymous political ads.

After discussions, the sponsor, whom Clear Channel Outdoor has called a "private family foundation" but declined to name, "thought the best solution was to take the boards down, so we are in the process of removing them," the company said in a statement.

Crews on Monday will begin taking down 30 billboards in Cleveland, 30 in Columbus and 85 in Milwaukee, Jim Cullinan, vice president of corporate communications for Clear Channel Outdoor, told Reuters.

Cleveland City Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland, one of the most vocal critics of the billboards, told Reuters on Sunday: "Needless to say I'm happy they will be taken down but I want to know who was behind this in the first place."

In response to the outcry, Clear Channel Outdoor donated 10 billboards around the Cleveland area that read "Voting Is a Right. Not a Crime!"

Follow Fridays: Sweet Nothings Blogger Interview | Invest In Your ...

So you all seemed to enjoy the first ever ?Follow Fridays? blogger interview last week with Venusian*Glow, hooray! It was great to chat to her, and some of you got to know her a bit better, or some of you were introduced to a new lingerie blogger to add to your list! Win, win.

So without further ado, let?s hear from this week?s featured blogger, Sweet Nothings.

Hi! Welcome to the second interview in IIYC?s ?Follow Fridays? series. Thanks for taking part! Please could you give us a little introduction?

Sweet Nothings: Sweet Nothings is a mishmash of the things I love and feel passionately about: lingerie, good bra fit basics, body image discussions, feminism, pole dancing, ballet, and baking.? Also my cats.? I think I?m breaking the first two rules of blogging: have a central focus, and keep the cat pictures to a minimum.

When did you start your blog and why?

Sweet Nothings: I started the blog at the beginning of May in 2012.? I?d actually had friends suggest I write a blog for a few years prior to that, but I never really felt competent or qualified.? I?d learned so much from reading other blogs, so I figured the word about good fit and good bras was out there, and others would find it like I had.? I realized more and more, however, that the wonderful women in my life were at best uncertain about their boobs and their bras, and at worst they?d had experiences that made them feel bad, ashamed, difficult, freakish, you name it.? This breaks my heart, because these women are lovely and awesome, and I know there are bras out there that would make them feel spectacular.? I hope to educate and to?assist: teach women how bra sizes work, and then empower them to fit themselves and discover their own likes and dislikes.? I wanted first and foremost to help my friends, and if other women (and men) found my words helpful, then awesome.

I know it can be hard to figure out where to get started, and it can be hard to pin down what works for you.? Bra?fit isn?t a matter-of-fact science of numbers; depending on your shape, size, and build, you may find that a system or a brand that works for you won?t always work for everyone else.? So I wanted to make sure that my friends, at the very least, had a kind voice saying ?It?s ok!? Let?s figure this out together.?? My rallying cry is ?It?s not you; it?s your bra.?? If you don?t feel fantastic about your boobs, the problem isn?t you.? You just need a better bra.

Which other lingerie blogs do you read the most?

Sweet Nothings: Oh lordy, I read a lot of them!? Invest in Your Chest, clearly,?as well as Fuller Figure Fuller Bust, Bras I Hate, Butterfly Collection, A Sophisticated Pair, Busts4Justice, The Lingerie Addict,?The Full Figured Chest, The Lingerie Lesbian . . . I could go on.? There are some wonderful writers out there, and the thing I think is so great is there are lots of different perspectives.? Women write with advice about fit, shape, bra construction, hard-to-find sizes, bargains, luxuries, clothing, maternity, aging, sexuality, the list goes on.? We?re scattered all over the world and come in all shapes and sizes and ages, and reading these blogs is a wonderful reminder of the beauty of diversity.

Where do you recommend people go get fitted?

Sweet Nothings: That?s a hard one, particularly in the US. I have had MOSTLY good luck at Nordstrom, and MOSTLY good luck at Townshop in NYC, but even then there are caveats.? Sometimes your fitter is off her game, sometimes she?s unsure, sometimes (unfortunately) she has to be right and can?t always hear and address customer concerns with an open or empathetic mind.? I do a lot of online shopping and self-fitting, something I?d never be able to do if I hadn?t been reading all these different bloggers for a year or two.? If you?re in North Carolina, A Sophisticated Pair is the place to go, no matter your size.? If you have trouble finding a?good fitter near you (not Victoria?s Secret;?the bras are pretty if you wear one of the sizes they offer, but they?re notorious for fitting women into the wrong size just to make a sale), I recommend checking out a Skype fitting with Butterfly Collection or a telephone fitting with Bravissimo.

Which brand do you think suits your shape and style best?

Sweet Nothings: I used to be a Freya girl through and through, but I?ve been switching to Panache and?her sister brands lately as my size has changed and my needs and preferences have shifted accordingly.? Cleo, in particular, has become my one true love lately.? The unlined balconettes fit like they were made?for my shape, and I adore the colors, patterns, and details.? Full-bust doesn?t have to mean frumpy!

What is your ?desert island? lingerie set?

Sweet Nothings: Right now it?s the Marcie set by Cleo.? I?m wearing it as I type, and I just feel smoking hot in it (the sexy kind of hot, not?the temperature kind).? It?s incredibly supportive, gives me a fantastic shape, doesn?t shift around or dig in, and is super, super pretty.? So if I had to choose one lingerie set out of my current wardrobe to wear forever and ever, it?d be Marcie hands-down.

What, in your opinion, are the biggest upcoming trends in the lingerie world this Autumn/Winter?

Sweet Nothings: Good grief, I feel wildly unqualified to answer that question.? I guess the things I?ve noticed are some predictably autumnal styles: warmer, deeper colors, the return of black lace, and darker, more elegant patters.? Also lots of royal or navy blue this?season, which I love, both because it?s incredibly flattering and because it?s slightly unusual for lingerie.? I think the?knickers landscape is really changing, too: it used to be I could only find low-cut bikini briefs or thongs, but more and more brands (and amazing independent designers on Etsy) are releasing some gutsy, diverse designs: high-waisted knickers, panty girdles, shorts, ouvert knickers, and more.? I hope this diversity sticks around; one thing I?ve learned writing this blog is that as many?women struggle to fit their rears/hips as struggle to fit their boobs.? More options?= more happiness.

Are you a plunge or a balconette girl?

Sweet Nothings: Oooh, I?m a little of both.? Balconettes are often an easier fit for me (see: Cleo, My Undying Love For), but the right plunge bra can feel spectacular.? I?m one of the few women who doesn?t love the Freya Deco.? I?ll happily recommend it to?others, because it?s a great bra, but it?s?just not my cup of tea.? The Tango Plunge by Panache?? Yes, and more yes.? Generally, though, I stick to a few reliable balconette shapes.? Freya?s Pollyanna was my go-to, but now I?m more likely to turn to Panache and her sister brands.

What is your lingerie guilty pleasure?

Sweet Nothings: Right now it?s boudoir/pin-up inspired lingerie.? I keep lusting after (and sometimes buying? I?m sorry, credit card) incredibly impractical things: sheer, ruffled, feathered robes and peignoirs, silk tap?shorts, seamed stockings, girdles and garter belts, basques, the works.? The few pieces I own I don?t wear on a regular basis, because subway/dirt/cats/work/daily grind, but I love the over-the-top sensuality, sophistication, and sexiness.

What do you think is missing from the current lingerie market?

Sweet Nothings: I?d love, selfishly, to see more boudoir/lounge/nightwear for?fuller busts (and fuller figures).? Bordelle, Agent Provacateur, La Fee Verte, Mimi Holliday and?others make some extraordinary, creative, stunning pieces.? I admit that the needs of full-bust or full-figure customers might impose some design restrictions, but I?d love to see more babydolls, chemises, bodysuits, harnesses, etc. that fit and flatter different shapes.? Bravissimo is doing a good job of offering some casual nightwear (and 1 basque), but?customers over an H-cup, customers with very small band sizes, and?full-bust customers looking for sexy-times nightwear or lingerie are still pretty much left out.? Elomi, Parfait, and others are slowly?releasing more basques and chemises, though, so that?s fun.? Also, while I?love all things frilly and feminine, full-bust customers who are interested in a more androgynous or edgy look really struggle to find items that aren?t frumpy or dull.? Finally, my dream set?right now is a?sheer,?full-bust unlined longline bra like an adapted version of Freya?s Arabella.? I think it would be the prettiest thing ever.? :)

?

Thanks so much to?Sweet Nothings for agreeing to go first in the series! Check back next week to hear from another of my faves.

T-Mobile, Sprint and DirecTV file with FCC to halt Verizon's AWS acquisition

Ready for round two of the great spectrum wars? In what is undeniably an uncanny bit of wireless industry déjà vu, T-Mobile, Sprint, DirecTV, in addition to the Rural Telecommunications Group and six others, have filed a request with the FCC to halt its 180-day review of Verizon's AWS acquisition. According to the consortium's claims, documents submitted by Big Red and its cabler partners (Cox, Time Warner, Bright House and Comcast) in favor of the transaction are heavily redacted and therefore not in the public interest. The group is petitioning the Commission to place an absolute freeze on all of the operator's pending license transfers until full legal disclosure has been achieved. This latest Capitol Hill impasse comes right on the heels of VZW's own filing, in which it outlines an allegedly impending spectrum drought that would see specific pockets of its network hitting capacity by 2015. Neither the FCC nor DOJ have yet to weigh in on either of these proceedings, but, rest assured, this certainly won't be the last we hear of this mobile saga.
