Egyptian soccer deaths bring new cycle of violence (AP)

CAIRO ? Protesters filled the streets and clashed for a second day Friday with police who fired tear gas and birdshot in Cairo, as a deadly soccer riot focused rising public anger over lawlessness and collapsing security a year after Egypt's uprising.

Six people have been killed and more than 1,500 injured in the latest bloodshed that followed a violent melee and stampede after a soccer game Wednesday in the Mediterranean city of Port Said in which 74 people died.

Egyptians streamed out of Friday prayers in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and several Nile Delta cities, criticizing police and calling on the military rulers led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi to step down.

On Cairo's Tahrir Square ? the heart of the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak a year ago ? protesters raised banners and pictures of those killed in Port Said and chanted, "The people want to execute the marshal."

The police force, which for decades was associated with torture and corruption in the Mubarak regime, is now being criticized in the soccer stadium deaths ? whether from a lack of control or, as some alleged, on purpose.

For many Egyptians, the security vacuum is not just a sign of incompetence but part of the larger overall failure by the military council to steer the country through its turbulent transitional period. They also see selectivity in policing the streets.

Leading democracy advocate Mohamed ElBaradei said delays in reforming the security apparatus is itself "a crime against the nation," adding that the current violence is the "price we pay for stumbling in the transitional period."

The clashes in Cairo began Thursday as the bodies of the dead soccer fans were returned to the capital for burial, and the violence escalated. Protesters converged on the headquarters of the Interior Ministry, which oversees police, throwing stones.

Police responded with tear gas and birdshot, and protesters donned helmets and gas masks to battle their way through streets thick with smoke from tear gas and burning tires.

"I came because I'm trying to do anything to feel that I took part in getting people's rights and voicing all that's inside me," said 20-year-old Ahmed Emad, whose two friends were killed in Port Said. "If I sit at home, I will explode after all I've seen."

The death toll from Friday's violence rose to six. That figure included a security officer in Cairo, according to the official MENA news agency.

One protester in Cairo was killed after being hit by birdshot at close range, a volunteer doctor said on condition of anonymity because he feared reprisal.

Four protesters died in Suez after police opened fire on a crowd of about 3,000 demonstrators in front of police headquarters, according to local health officials. A third protester in Suez was in critical condition with a wound to the neck.

The Port Said soccer riot began when fans of the home team, Al-Masry, stormed the field after their club defeated Al-Ahly, one of Cairo's top teams. Police in black uniforms and riot gear were seen in television video broadcast nationwide standing by and largely doing nothing amid the chaos.

The bloodshed ? the worst in the soccer world in 15 years ? enraged protesters who were already frustrated with the slow pace of reform by the military leaders.

A network of zealous Al-Ahly soccer fans known as Ultras, who were prominent police foes during the uprising, accused the security forces of deliberately allowing the Al-Masry supporters to attack.

Some lawmakers suggested that the military allowed the attack to happen to show the need for a reinstatement of the recently abolished emergency laws, in which the police enjoyed nearly unlimited power.

For their part, police are resentful of the abuse they suffered during the uprising and they also fear being criticized or even prosecuted if they use excessive force, something that was tolerated and encouraged under Mubarak.

Activist Nour Nour said Interior Ministry officials "failed in providing security but have been successful in protecting what they want to protect."

The ruling generals, for their part, have accused a "third party" and "foreign hands" of being behind acts of violence.

Tantawi said incidents like the soccer violence "happen anywhere in the world. We will not let those behind it go. ... This will not affect Egypt and its security."

The police failure to prevent the soccer riot was the bloodiest example of a series of security lapses as crime has surged since the uprising.

Two American tourists and their tour guide were abducted at gunpoint Friday and held for several hours by Bedouin tribesmen in a brazen daylight attack along a busy highway in the Sinai desert, dealing another blow to Egypt's already battered tourism industry.

Maj. Gen. Mohammed Naguib, the head of security for southern Sinai, said the three were taken from a minivan while traveling from St. Catherine's Monastery to the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh.

They were released hours later after promises by security officials to look into their demands, which include the release of a number of fellow tribesmen arrested this week on drug trafficking and robbery charges.

Bedouins have long complained of discrimination and random arrests by the government, and the Sinai was restive even under Mubarak, but the kidnappings of the Americans and other recent high-profile attacks signaled an escalation.

Elsewhere on the Sinai Peninsula, four masked gunmen stopped the vehicle of two Italian workers for a food factory in the city of Suez, taking their car, more than 10,000 euros ($13,000) and their laptops, said company director Mohammed Antar. The Italians were not harmed.

On Monday, there was a series of major thefts in Cairo, including armed robberies at two banks and a mail office.

Adel Shokry, the secretary general of the south Sinai Hotel Association, said the general security situation in the country is "pitiful."

"I think there is plenty of lawlessness. The security agencies are not working as efficiently as they had before. They must review their positions," he said. "I think the army must step in to fill in this security vacuum."

Automakers start year with strong sales

By msnbc.com staff and wire

Car sales zoomed ahead in January, with many automakers reporting solid sales at the start of a year expected to show a steady gain in vehicle purchases.

Chrysler, now privately held and majority owned by Italy?s Fiat, was the notable standout for the month. It posted a 44 percent rise in U.S. auto sales, led by gains for its Jeep brand, while its larger domestic rival General Motors lost ground in a month marked by modest growth.

Chrysler?s sales blew past some analysts? expectations of a 35 percent increase, demonstrating the remarkable comeback of the smallest U.S. automaker nearly three years after its taxpayer-funded bankruptcy restructuring. It also reported its first full-year profit since 1997.

GM, the largest U.S. automaker, reported a 6 percent drop in U.S. auto sales for the month, while Ford posted sales that were 7 percent higher, spurred by a 60 percent jump in sales of the Focus small car. Japan?s Toyota said its January sales in the U.S. rose 7.5 percent as momentum from the fourth quarter of last year picked up speed.

U.S. auto sales, an early indication of consumer demand each month, are expected to show an overall rise of 6 percent in January. Older cars, which now average a record 11 years old, are helping to boost new car sales as people trade them in after delaying purchases during the economic downturn.

As drivers replace their aging cars, new car sales are expected to grow through at least the start of 2012. At the same time, used vehicle prices have jumped compared to new car prices, which could drive car buyers to purchase a new car over a used one. Ford economist Jenny Lin said low interest rates as well as stable gasoline prices are also supporting vehicle sales.

So far, the annualized sales rate for January, traditionally a tepid month for auto sales, is tracking at 13.8 million vehicles, JP Morgan analyst Himanshu Patel said in a research note. This surpasses the 13.5 million sales rate that analysts had expected and is slightly higher than the nearly 13.6 million sales rate reached in December.

GM was expected to show a decline in sales compared to last January, when the automaker offered consumer incentives to jump-start sales. It has since pulled back from this approach.

?The old days of going blindly after market share are over, and most manufacturers are now concentrating on what really matters, which is profitability,? said Jesse Toprak, TrueCar.com analyst.

GM sales totaled 167,962 vehicles in January. The carmaker predicted that light vehicle sales in 2012 would range from 13.5 million to 14 million.

Some analysts had expected GM to report a 9 percent drop.

?In 2012, we will strengthen our position with more new products, an even better dealership experience and reinforce the disciplined ?go to market? strategy that helped us grow profitably in the United States in 2011,? GM?s U.S. sales chief Don Johnson said in a statement.

Volkswagen and Nissan reported sales gains for January. VW sales rose 48 percent to 27,209 vehicles, buoyed by the introduction of its Passat sedan. It was the German automaker?s best sales month in decades. Nissan?s U.S. sales rose 10.4 percent to 79,313.

During a call with reporters, Jonathan Browning, chief executive of VW in America, said U.S. consumer confidence was growing, but not a swift rate.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Homeboy Industries Shares Gang Members' Stories Of Success

Within the country's largest gang intervention program, young men and women learn job skills working side-by-side with their would-be rivals. That's because one of Homeboy Industries' founding principles is that it works with gang members.

Los Angeles-based Homeboy Industries provides academic, career and re-entry services to thousands of current and former gang members every day, founder and director Father Gregory Boyle explained to a group of Huffington Post editors and reporters on Monday.

The organization's opportunities and programs fill in gaps in government services, Boyle said. It has grown to include a charter school as well as social services and job training facilities. The nonprofit also has a bakery, farmers markets and a cafe that all employ gang members.

Boyle, a former Los Angeles pastor, said he had to bury 180 young people lost to violence in the 1980s, which prompted him to create the organization. He explained that the approach to re-entry services must go much deeper than the common perception of what causes gang violence.

"It's not about conflict, or else peacemaking would work," he said. "It's about despair -- not rational grievance. No shooter is hoping to kill; rather they are hoping to die."

Boyle said Homeboy has received recognition for its role in Los Angeles' declining gang-related homicide rate. But perhaps an even greater testament to its effectiveness is Will Lopez, a former gang member who found a new start through Homeboy. He sought out the help of Father Doyle, his neighborhood priest at the time, who assisted him in finding a job and a direction in life.

Lopez told The Huffington Post that he has worked in fields from maintenance to computer technology, but that he has developed a specific interest in speaking out against domestic violence. His father was murdered, and he wanted to make sure he would be involved in his own daughter's life.

"I made a commitment to my daughter that that wouldn't happen," he said.

Like the gang members it helps, Homeboy has had its share of hardships. After the Homeboy Bakery burned down in October 1999, the nonprofit relied on donors. (Disclosure: HuffPost Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington helped lead that effort.)

Father Boyle added that the organization ran out of money 18 months ago, due in part to the recession. The company laid off numerous employees and Boyle stopped taking paychecks.

"In the early days, you could always find jobs for the 'homies,'" Boyle said, noting that competition in the job market took a toll on the organization's efforts.

Homeboy has inspired 15 similar initiatives around the country, from San Francisco to Boston. The organization also has a successful food line found in major grocery stores, and it is working to spread the word about how its programs can work in other areas. Boyle sums it by saying the approach comes down to one mantra.

"Let's be smart on crime, rather than soft or hard on crime."

China streams live panda video to foster conservation (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China began Wednesday streaming live video footage of its pandas around the world via webcam in an attempt to boost awareness of conservation efforts for its beloved but endangered animal ambassadors.

High-definition cameras are set to feature pandas in two reserves at the Bifengxia Panda Center near Ya'an city in China's southwestern Sichuan province, the media non-profit Explore.org and China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda said in a statement.

"Using cameras to share these magnificent creatures in their homeland will remind people of the heavy responsibility we all have to the world we share," Li Desheng, a doctor at the panda research center, said in the statement.

Camera one follows five young cubs, Zhichun, Qingshan, Chaoyang and twin toddlers Fengfeng and Au'au. Camera two features two adult pandas, Yaoman and Shenbing. Both can be accessed at the project's website: www.explore.org/pandas.

The groups said the website will transmit a mix of live footage and re-broadcast highlights.

Wednesday, one camera showed two pandas rolling on their backs while munching on leaves in misty mountain surroundings. A third panda could be seen in the background walking along a hill.

"This is just too cute. I'm seeing two pandas 'leaning' up against each other, eating bamboo. Just too darn cute!!!" a user named "swom" said of some earlier footage in an online posting.

Considered a national treasure, pandas have come back from the brink of extinction but they remain under threat from logging, agriculture and encroachment.

In 2004, a census by the Worldwide Fund for Nature found 1,600 pandas in the wild, most in Sichuan province.

China has been sending pandas abroad in gestures of goodwill since the 1950s in what has come to be known as "panda diplomacy."
