PANAMA CITY ? Eastern Shipbuilding Group is sharing its success with the community.
On Wednesday, Eastern and its owner Brian D?Isernia donated over $40,000 to the American Cancer Society.
Each year, Eastern holds an employee golf tournament, and selects local charities to receive the proceeds. This year was the 14th year for the tournament
This year they selected the American Cancer Society to receive the $16,000 and $500 they raised.
D?Isernia was so inspired by the effort, he decided the company would match the amount.
?Eastern?s donation of $16,500 has been in honor of Fred Clayton who passed away recently of cancer. He was a resident of Wewahitchka, a long time employee and a good friend to Eastern,? said D?Isernia.
Jerry Huff with Eastern Shipbuilding said, ?our vendors pretty much donate to sponsor the tournament. We don?t charge our employees to play in it, we don?t charge the vendors to play in it. All the money goes back to the tournament and to the charity we choose to donate to, like the American Cancer Society for the last three years.?
Another Eastern employee, Linda Mann, donated more than $8,000 she collected alone through poker runs and other events, for this year?s Lynn Haven Relay for Life event.
That?s the highest amount raised by an individual.
?I have a roommate who passed away of cancer in October. It was very quick, very fast, very moving. I?m a cancer survivor myself since 2008. This is my fifth year as a survivor and I think everybody?s entitled to more birthdays,? Mann said.
?This is a tremendous contribution. (This is) the single largest contribution coming out of our office, which covers seven counties. ... Eastern Shipbuilding stepping up and doing this for us just shows their generosity, their compassion, and their commitment to the cause,? said Dee Hayhurst from the American Cancer Society.
The Cancer Society will use the money to provide a wide spectrum of services like public awareness and education about early detection and screening, as well as cancer research.
