Phil Krinkie joins GOP race to succeed Bachmann

Former Republican state Rep. Phil Krinkie, a businessman and the president of the Taxpayers League of Minnesota, announced Friday that he will run for Minnesota's 6th District congressional seat.

Krinkie made his first campaign appearance Saturday at the Sherburne County Fair in Elk River, where he formally announced his candidacy.

Krinkie, of Shoreview, owns St. Paul-based Snelling Co., a heating and air-conditioning business. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. He served in the Legislature for 16 years, including roles on the Taxes, Government Finance and Capital Investment committees. During his tenure, he developed a reputation for steadfast opposition to expensive projects and government spending.

"Certainly, our country is headed down the wrong path, fiscally," Krinkie said Saturday. "Just this week, the city of Detroit became the biggest city to file for bankruptcy. That's the canary in the coal mine, and now the canary's dead. I don't have any obvious, easy solutions, but I have a passion for serving our state and our country. The easy thing to do would have been to continue running my business ... and stay with the Taxpayers League. It was a difficult decision, since it is a commitment of time and resources, but I really want to hear what the people of the 6th Congressional District want to see from their representative."

The 6th District, which is represented by Michele Bachmann, extends from the St. Croix River Valley through the northern suburbs to St. Cloud in the north and Carver County in the south. Krinkie ran for the Republican endorsement for the 6th District in 2006 but lost to Bachmann, who went on to be elected to the seat. Bachmann announced in May that she would not seek a fifth term in 2014.

The 6th District is considered one of Minnesota's most Republican-leaning districts. Former Republican gubernatorial nominee Tom Emmer, Anoka County Commissioner Rhonda Sivarajah and state Sen. John Pederson also are running for the seat.

On Saturday, Krinkie called Emmer and Sivarajah "friends and political allies." He acknowledged that the race is expected to be tight but said he can set himself apart from other candidates with his record of public service and business experience.

"I already have some bridges. I already have some relationships," he said. "I can get started serving Minnesota right away."
